Replace Output Driver Chips on the Application Board
This How-to is intended for:
Any audience.
Problem
You've pushed the outputs a little too far, and burned out the driver chips. Never fear - it's very unlikely that you've fatally injured your board, and it's simple and cheap to replace the chips.
Solution
- Purchase a couple extra driver chips - they're about $1.88 each at DigiKey.com, one-off. The manufacturer part number is SN754410NE and the DigiKey part number is 296-9911-5-ND.
- Remove the burnt chip by gently prying it out of the socket with a screwdriver or similar tool - be sure to power down the board first.
- Place the new chip into the socket - orientation is important. Make sure the end of the chip with a little indentation is facing the end of the socket with an indentation.
Discussion
When placing a chip into a socket, you may need to slightly shape the legs so they're straight and slide in properly. As with any sensitive electronic devices, avoid exposing the chips to static electricity.
You can also consider adding a heatsink to your output driver to help avoid burning it out in the first place. Check them out at DigiKey - http://www.digikey.com/scripts/DkSearch/dksus.dll?Detail?name=HS179-ND
